Overview

We created the Interactive Art Exhibition "AI Goes Crazy" - using black technology to transform ancient fairy tales for Alibaba at 2019 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC).

The exhibition aims to invite people to explore intuitive interactions and immersive experiences so as to understand how AI technology exerts a positive impact on our lives and our future. Visitors can immerse themselves in the dreamy scenes, and interact with objects from familiar stories, like the Magic Lamp, Magic Mirror, Somersault Cloud and the Giant.

I played multiple roles, a project manager, a designer and a content maker, in this three-month project. I led the design concept, and presented pitch decks to stakeholders. After winning the bidding, I took control of the project schedule and quality, and coordinated the design details with clients and multi-partners (Multimedia Production: Wonderlabs; Construction: Uniplan) in graphics, content, space, interaction, and social marketing. Meanwhile, I did part of space and interaction design, storyboards and copywriting.

POP ART Comics

I developed the concept and the stories of POP ART comics with my colleagues, JJ & Fiona.

The comics, just like pages in a storybook, were placed in front of different stations, introducing the unusual fairy tales of each journey to visitors.

They also played a big role in the promotion of the exhibition.

Takeaway

Tackle the changes of multi-parties’ needs

The client assigned the design, multimedia production, construction and operation to four different companies to complete. I needed to coordinate our concept and design with other three parties and clients. Undoubtedly, it took time and effort to understand different stakeholders’ requirements and reach alignment.

Each stage of the project came with disagreements and problems to solve. My biggest takeaway, apart from sharpening my understanding of design implementation and materials, was hands-on management experience about how to effectively communicate with interdisciplinary teams from different parties, formulate reasonable plans, and work on the same goal consistently.

Communicate early with low-fidelity mockups

I learned how low-fidelity mockups can be valuable to teamwork as I make the journey from concept to final outcome.

It's pivotal to communicate early with clients and development teams to make sure they align on intended functionality and provide feedback before designers and software engineers put a lot of work into the final design.
